DESAPARECIDOS
Mothers of the Disappeared
Sylvia Horwitz
October 25th through November 26th
My work has taken me from photographing archaeological dig sites in Israel and life in Jerusalem’s Old City to the tango neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, with numerous exhibits here and in Israel. In Argentina’s capitol city, I met a group of activist women in 2005 who have participated in weekly protest marches on Plaza de Mayo for over 35 years. They are the mothers of children who were kidnapped and murdered during time of the military dictatorship (1976-83). I was deeply moved and inspired by the Madres and Abuelas and wanted to make a visual record of what I was experiencing.
